Where do you Like to Eat?

Restaurant-Adventures in Food

Cafe Rosenhuset
Denmark
August 2023

Built into an old house and fishing shack, this restaurant offers limited indoor and outdoor seating. Some of the outdoor seating is enclosed to block the wind and has small heaters to help control the temperature. In addition, as with many outdoor seating areas in Denmark, there are lap blankets available. Restrooms are located upstairs and if you have mobility issues, this needs to be considered before choosing to eat here.

Orders are placed on a self check sheet and brought to the bar to be placed with the kitchen. The pricing for breakfast was in blocks of 3 items for one price, 5 items for another, and such. When your order is ready, it is delivered to your table. Everything we had was good and sitting outside allowed us to relax by the water. On a sunny day, it would have been a fantastic place to hang out for a longer time enjoying drinks and snacks.

La Perla Spaghetteria
Copenhagen, Denmark
July 2023

La Perla is around the corner from the 25 Hours Hotel, Copenhagen. There are a few seats for those who want to eat outside. The restaurant is not large but it is very busy and reservations are needed. Portions are good and the food is excellent. The Spaghetti Bolognese and the Lasagna al Forno were fantastic.  Our waiter was personable and we had fun interacting with him.  This is a no fuss place that is highly recommended.

Rotelli Pizza and pasta
Sunrise, FL
September 2020

We were looking for a change of pace and decided Italian would be the way to go. A recent thread on the Nextdoor App told us that many people in the area liked the food at Rotelli Pizza and Pasta. We looked up the closest location and found one at a nearby strip mall. Because it is located in a strip mall, parking is like any strip mall. Some areas of the small parking lot were busy while others were open. We had no issues parking but wonder if post-COVID if it will be the same.

First impression is that it is a restaurant in a strip mall. A basic place with a few tables and many booths. There is a hostess stand at the door where you wait to be seated. There is also a pizza counter toward the back on the left where they make the pizzas and people coming in for take out pizza go to pick it up. This area seemed busy the entire time we were in the building but it was not taking away from our dining experience. That being said, we were seated in a booth on the other side of the restaurant. I am not sure how it would have felt if we were sitting closer to that area.

We were seated immediately. The restaurant was following the local protocols for cleaning, distancing, and mask wearing. We did not see any staff or guests not wearing masks when moving about the restaurant. The hostess was pleasant enough and our server was excellent. He was attentive and able to give us some input about the ingredients in the dishes we were considering. He also made some suggestive selling efforts in a non intrusive and appropriate way. We over tipped because he was a great server.

The menu was extensive and had many options available. We noticed that one of the beverage options was San Pellegrino water. This is not available in many places and it was appreciated. The soup of the day was Cream of Carrot soup. If I did not have my mind on a more filling dish, I would have tried this. I hope it will be available again when I return. The dinners come with a choice of soup or salad. I chose the salad for a lighter option and the ability to eat my greens. It was a typical restaurant salad and came with a choice of dressings. I chose the house balsamic vinaigrette.

We ordered the Veal Parmesan and the Meat Lasagna. The portions of both were large. The veal was very good. It was more saucy than expected but the flavors were done right. The lasagna was very cheesy and put together well. The meat was a crumbly style and did not overpower the rest of the flavors. Even though I don’t eat much meat anymore, I would order this again. It was a great restaurant lasagna. We also had the garlic rolls which had a nice amount of garlic and were baked with the right amount of crunch outside and a tasty soft middle.

The portions were big enough that we both brought half of our entrees home to enjoy another day. Because the rest of the food was so good, we opted to get the dessert as well. The Milky Way Chocolate Cake was really good and something that would be considered again in the future. The strawberry cheesecake was also something to get again on a future visit.

We really enjoyed our meal here and want to return. The next time we come, we will try the pizza. Other future meals will likely be from the regular menu but due to the higher prices, the visits will be limited to special occasions. It is really too expensive to go on a regular basis even though the food was great.

Sal's Ballyhoo
Key Largo, Florida
August 2020

Sal’s Ballyhoo in Key Largo is a small and comfortable place. It is in an old house style place but I am unsure if it was actually ever a house. We came three times during our short trip. We sat in a booth each time. Note: The booth closest to the bathroom is not very comfortable. It leaned back very far and was difficult to eat and be comfortable. This was the only issue we had there.

Staff was very friendly and efficient. They chatted when we wanted them too and left us alone at the appropriate times. They made us feel like regulars and this is something we enjoy.  If it is your kind of thing, they do have shirts and hats for sale. It is a tourist area after all.

Dining out in the time of COVID-19 is a changed experience. Masks are required upon entry. This is a rule throughout the Florida Keys at this time. The menu was accessed using your Smart Phone so there was no need to touch a menu that may have been touched by many others. When looking at the menu, we found it to have a lot of options. There was even a large section for vegetarians and vegans. The waitress was great about making sure I knew what was in the food and asked if I was vegetarian or vegan to ensure I didn’t order something that was not in the diet plan chosen.

If you are looking for beer, there is a variety here to choose from. You should be able to find one to complement your meal. The one I chose was a local one called “Crazy Girl”.  It is a honey blonde from the Waterfront Brewery in Key West.  Options, depending on  your choice of beer, included bottles or draft.

Food-

Sweet Potato Burger- very good with and without the bun.

Cheese burger (regular menu)- Standard burger and cooked exactly as requested, medium.

Black Bean Tacos- Not my favorite but still good. The tacos are a good size and a bit messy to eat.

Sauteed Green Beans- tasty and fresh.

Mac and Cheese (regular menu)- creamy cheese sauce with bread crumbles on top. Really Good and if you like Mac and Cheese, this is a must eat item.

Banana Ice Cream Sandwich (regular menu)- Good but would only want once in a while. Rated about a 7 out of 10.

Peanut Butter Oreo Cheesecake (regular menu)- Good and creamy as a cheesecake should be. The waitress told us it had recently won an award.

Mile High Peanut Butter Pie (regular menu)- This was outstanding!

Iced Tea-unsweetened- If you are an iced tea drinker, you know that it can be hard to find a good iced tea. This one was very good and satisfying.

Notes:

We were there on a Thursday afternoon around 140pm and we were the only customers there. Parking looked like it could be difficult when the building was crowded.

We ate inside but there is an outdoor seating area that is covered to help with the heat from the sun. We did not try this because it was hot enough to want to eat inside and because the restaurant is in the median and therefore, there are not ocean views or anything similar to enjoy. We thought there could be too much road noise with little benefit to eating outside.

We will definitely  be back when in the Key Largo area. The vegan and vegetarian options were a welcome touch.

Sweet Potato Burger and Sauteed Green Beans.

Ochoas Restaurant
Casa Grande, Arizona
March 2018

Ratings on Google made it sound like this would be a great place to eat but I didn’t find that to be the case. The salsa was not a style I would prefer. It was smooth in texture and was served picnic style in a plastic ketchup bottle. It had some heat to it but it was not a good taste, just heat. I do like my salsa with heat but this didn’t even taste like salsa to me.

The food had acceptable portions but none of the three of us were impressed. One ordered the chili and only ate only a few bites. One had enchiladas. His seemed to have the best taste of the three but even he said it was not worth the trip to the restaurant. I had a burrito that was very bland and uninspired. I know I ordered the ground beef burrito which is typically the least flavorful in a restaurant but usually they have something else in them along with the ground beef and tortilla. That was all. Not impressed and I can’t see why others say it is so good.

I won’t be returning to this restaurant and neither will the other two who live there and go out to eat often.

NOTE: There were three people during this trip. Two twenty somethings, male and female, and one middle aged woman. All three are big fans of Mexican food.

Vignetos Italian Grill
Weston, FL
2018

Vignetos was recommended to us for good food with large portions. There is more than one location and the one we chose was in Weston, FL. (or, at least, the portion of Sunrise that is next to Weston) This is the one that is next to the AMC Weston 8 Cinema.

We went on a Tuesday night. This restaurant is part of the strip mall and right next to the theater. Because the windows face the afternoon sun, the shades were all drawn and it made it look like the restaurant was closed. We tried the door anyway, knowing that they were supposed to be open and sure enough, they were. Keep this in mind when you go and don’t make any assumptions.

Inside, the restaurant was smaller than we expected but there were a lot of booths and a small corner bar with televisions above it. I guess the televisions were there because of the bar but if you were sitting at the bar, it didn’t look like  you would be able to see the screens anyway. I think it would improve the atmosphere of the restaurant if they removed the televisions altogether.

Service was fast and efficient. The server was not especially friendly but he did his job well enough. No complaints there unless you wanted to spend time chatting with the server. Food was served quickly and looked appealing. It was also very tasty and we were happy that we gave them a try. One person had lasagna and the other had veal. Prices were pretty steep. Sodas were just under $3 each.

I am sure that we will give them another try because there was a reasonable sized menu and more options that we would like to taste. Because of the higher price, we will not go often.
